Discover credit card would like to see more students from challenging backgrounds go to college. This is why they have designed the Discover scholarship to reach out to students who have met with a specific roadblock in the educational development. They are looking to award scholarships of up to $40,000 to make it possible for more students to get an education after high school.

Requirements for Eligibility

To be eligible for the Discover scholarship program you will have to have at least a 2.75 GPA based on a 4.0 grading scale. This GPA will have to have been maintained throughout the 9th and 10th grades. You will also have to be able to show how you have been a leader in your community as well as how you have made a commitment to community service.

What to Say in Your Essay

Keep in mind all of the students trying to win this scholarship will have a hard luck story to tell. You want to make sure not to highlight the problems you have had, but what you have done to overcome them and move forward. You should stress how a college education will allow you to continue in this manner.

You should also stress in your essay how you will be able to use your college education to help others in your situation to either avoid obstacle altogether or to overcome them the same ways you did. Highlight how your education will help not only you but the community.
